St. Petersburg Green Efforts: Successes and Failures

Supply Shield, Inc. is big on taking care of our world. The environment, especially our local environment, can have a large impact on the overall happiness of a town or city. St. Petersburg has taken large steps towards improving the efficiency of how our city runs. We have the distinction of being the first green city in Florida. St. Petersburg was designated as the first city in the state to become a “Green City” by the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC). St. Petersburg was awarded the distinction for its renowned environmental initiatives, some of which include: one of the country’s largest reclaimed water systems; recycling program and a successful yard waste-to-mulch program; preservation of environmentally sensitive land and habitat restorations; an extensive parks system; more than 50 miles of bicycle trails; water conservation education; programs to protect surface waters; tree planting programs; environmental education at such places as the, Boyd Hill Nature Preserve, Sunken Gardens and Weedon Island; and more. And, there are plenty of small groups out there who make a difference. However, it feels like we still have a ways to go, and it won’t be until we come together as a community, with government involvement, that things will really start to change. I’ve talked here before about what San Francisco has done, and the amazing improvements they have made in how they handle waste. Let’s look at a couple things that St. Pete has done recently. Success North Shore Aquatic Complex The Tampa Bay Times reports, The new Defender filter will virtually eliminate the large amount of backwash water associated with sand filters. The upgrade is...

Keep Pinellas Beautiful

In September, Supply Shield (SS) employees spent a Saturday morning giving back to the Earth and the Saint Petersburg community. In a volunteer effort with Pinellas County Watershed Management & Keep Pinellas Beautiful we cleaned up trash in and around the Cross Bayou Canal and Joe’s Creek located in the heart of Pinellas County. Joe’s Creek Watershed is a 9256-acre drainage basin in south-central Pinellas County. The basin includes parts of the cities of Pinellas Park, St. Petersburg, and Kenneth City. The Joe’s Creek system includes a main branch and three tributaries and is surrounded by residential, commercial, industrial, and recreational spaces. The main channel of Joe’s Creek flows from east to west, ultimately discharging into Cross Bayou. (for more information on Joe’s Creek Watershed, visit PinellasCounty.org) During this year’s event, Supply Shield and other participants helped to remove 1,360lbs of debris from these two waterways!! The single stream recyclable material consisted of 300 pounds of glass, plastic, paper, steel, and aluminum. Supply Shield was amazed by the level of pollution, noting “we worked in such a small area and picked up everything from used needles to kids toys.” By the time this September’s event was complete, the area had improved considerably. Many bags of garbage were disposed of properly and even larger amounts of material were taken to a single-stream recycling center. SS found the volunteer opportunity to be rewarding, but also as a learning experience. If more people participated in events like this, they would make better decisions about how they dispose of their garbage. The experience was one that everyone should see during their lifetime. Top Rank Joins Supply Shield

Over the past few months our growth has been predominantly internal. However, Supply Shield is pleased to announce our recent merger with Top Rank Components and Hardware (Top Rank). As of September 2, 2013, the combined firm began operating solely as Supply Shield, Inc. This merger adds an experienced procurement and sales staff and will only benefit our customers moving forward. We believe that a larger organization will allow us to provide a wider array of services and more depth. When we found that Top Rank held the same values as Supply Shield, we began doggedly pursuing the opportunity to join forces. Top Rank exceeded our hopes and we look forward to continuing the tradition we have for excellent service, deep expertise, and an environment our clients and associates want to be a part of. Very soon, we will be able to provide our clients with even more in-depth purchasing power and new areas of...
